Chatuge Dam and VW van!
Went to the Chatuge Dam to do the trail. Not a long trail but it goes along the lake and the views are really pretty. Stopped at the winding stair gap spring to fill up some water jugs. This is right by the Appalachian trail so we walked some of it. Just to say we did it 😂 There was a couple filing up a bunch of jugs when we were here. We also came across two men who are currently doing the Appalachian trail! That was cool.
Decided to check out the winery that is on the way back to our campsite. It's called Eagle Fork Vineyards and it was so peaceful! The bartender was Amanda and she is from Dayton, Ohio. We always meet fellow Ohioans lol. She was playing really good music and made us a really nice charcuterie board! The wine here was really good. You can walk the vineyards and look around. We had a great time.
There's a tavern that looked really neat by our campground as well. I was looking online and it says members only tavern. But when I was reading reviews some people said that the place was really nice towards travelers. So we gave it a shot. The owners are awesome and the place takes you back to the 50's. There's no food here either but there was a birthday party going on and they had sooo much food. They let us join in and get what we wanted. There was a VW van parked outside that Joe and I were taking pictures of. We sat next to some older guy at the bar and started talking. His name was Don and he happened to be the owner of the van. He took us outside and showed us around. The van was soooo cute. Joe said it smelled like his pop up camper. The smell brought me back. He asked if we would want to take a ride with him to see his house and just around the block. We said of course! He put on some Beach Boys and off we went. He was telling us stories about his day and the memories made in the van. I couldn't stop smiling. His house is one of the houses Joe and I would always comment on when we passed it on our way out of the campground. What are the chances 😂 His house is gorgeous.
There's no real closing time at this place since the owners live right there and they're only open Thursday-Sunday. So they shut it down early. Some lady gave me some of the boiled peanuts she made at home before we left. Wow. I know boiled peanuts are a southern thing and we've been wanting to try some. They were so amazing. We will be making our own for sure lol.
When we got back to our campground we went to the community fire and had the fire to ourselves. We listened to music and watched the Alice in Wonderland fire pit glow. There were new travelers in one of the RV site when we got back. About one hour into our fire they left the campsite in a rush. Joe asked if they needed help but they said no. Something about their child having some sort of attack. We watched them pull out and then thirty minutes later they came back around. They must have went the wrong way. I kept thinking about our terrible driving experience in the mountains and felt bad for them.
